I never expected anything real. I just wanted you to pay attention to me. I want to matter to you, even if it’s strictly in a friend way.

If Someone Said About J.K Rowling the Things I see People say About John Green (A Wave of Social Justice Hate Attacks my Bookshelf)

Either I wasn’t paying attention before or people have suddenly decided to jump on some weird “hate John Green because he’s a successful author who also happens to be a white male and that makes him bad!” I see a lot of “this female author is awesome but isn’t super popular but John Green is and it’s not fair because it’s all due to his white maleness!”

Okay, so…I don’t even really know where to start, so I’m just going to jump right in.

You say John Green is only successful because he’s a white male? What if someone said, say, J.K Rowling is only successful because she’s a white female? You’d say, “No, it’s because she’s a great writer!” Right, it is because she’s a great writer. Guess what! Same goes for John Green; whether you personally like him or not, he is a good writer. He captures something magical, something real that keeps people reading his books.

Now, using the same example, I never hear/see anyone say “So and So female author is awesome but she isn’t as popular as J.K Rowling and that’s not fair!” You don’t say this because J.K Rowling is also a female. Still, though, she’s still a million times more popular than so and so author, so why aren’t you bitching about it? Oh, right, because your complaints aren’t based on you feeling that a great author has been overlooked, they’re based on you wanting to shit on a really great writer just because he happens to also be a white man. You just want a reason to be angry, to yell and scream and say “It’s just SO unfair!” There is no fact, logic, or basis to your argument.

What’s actually unfair is the fact that you are judging a writer’s skill set on their race and gender rather than their skills. I know, you’ll say “No, that’s what America or the patriarchy or blah blah blah is doing and that’s why I’m mad and that’s why I’m saying this!” No, okay? No. You wanted something to be mad about, John Green and his books have been rising in popularity over the last few years, so you latched on to that as your target. Now, this is what you’re actually doing: Rather than “standing up” for equality in literature you are actually perpetuating what you claim to be against, that it’s okay to judge an author based on their skin color and whether they’re male or female. You think just because you’re doing this on “the right side” that it’s okay, but it’s not. Judging someone like that is never okay no matter what side you’re on, what your opinion is, or who you are.

Another thing is this: Yes, there are a ton of great writers who probably will never get the recognition they deserve. This isn’t because there’s some crazy conspiracy to only make white male authors successful, it’s due to a number of factors. First of all, the book industry is tough, in order to really get yourself and your book out there you have to be in the right place at the right time, have a good publisher, know the right people, etc. On top of that your book has to be one that will appeal to a lot of people. If you get published and your book is out in stores all over the world, the rest is really up to chance. What people like to read changes constantly, and simply being a good writer will not make people read your book. It’s not John Green’s fault that his books are the kind that are extremely popular with people right now, whatever your opinion is on his genre and writing style, he’s still writing what people want to read and that’s going to gain him recognition.

The point is, don’t be hateful over something so silly. Don’t voice your outrage all over the internet when your anger is based on absolutely nothing aside from your want to have something to be angry about. Stop fighting hate with hate; don’t perpetuate what you claim to be against. People are PEOPLE before they are ANYTHING else, and that means all people; even white males. Stop bashing a good writer just because you don’t like his writing or just because he’s a successful man, it doesn’t make you look intelligent and it doesn’t make you look right.

If we could all just get past all of this crap, all of this social justice insanity that clogs up the internet, pollutes our minds, and essentially does nothing but help things like hate and discrimination to stay alive things would be better. Never think it’s okay to be hateful just because you believe you’re on the “right” side or just because you’re a minority in your opinion or position. If you really want to do something good for the world, do it with kindness and respect for other people. Remember that the one thing every single one of us is, is a person. Celebrities or authors you say mean things about, make fun of, and send hate mail to? They’re people, just like you with feelings and everything. Just stop, just be nice.

the-unpopular-opinions:

As a denizen of a third world country struggling for reforms and handling corruption, I find social justice as appealing. Here on Tumblr, it’s completely misguided.
How on Earth will you obtain equality for all people if you threaten to dox or even force someone to kill themselves?
Is that what you want to raise awareness of? Sending hate mail and screaming out oppression for those who have a different opinion from you?
Can you stop whining about why Frozen, Rapunzel or Brave doesn’t have any Arabs, Chinese or Moroccans? Can you stop talking about how men complimenting you are misogynist pigs? Can you complaining about a girl’s last great day with her cancer stricken father? Can you stop telling people that hate only works one way?
You can’t. You’ll just complain how this post is oppressing you or triggering you.
You trivialize everything around you. You trivialize oppression, rape, abuse and trauma. You make racism seem harmless and acceptable. You make non-binary people harder to be understood. You trivialize mental disorders by making it more abnormal than it is normal intended to be. (Autiself thing is just ridiculous).
It actually makes me upset when I post something interesting and awful news about things happening in Asia and Africa on Tumblr only to be brushed aside.
Do you know that people can’t choose their favourite careers because they fear that they won’t be able to support their family well? Anti-Muslim riots? First gay marriage in Southeast Asia? People being beaten up and killed for being different? Women raped, forced in prostitution and stripped of their identity? REAL people killed and imprisoned for campaigning about women’s rights, LGBT rights and democracy?
"LALALALALALA, I am not going to listen. It’s my problem. I’ll just continue to whine about  representation in fiction and "acceptance" for speshul snowflakes"

Occasional Texts and Tentative Plans

About seven months ago I got a new job; the one I have now. Basically, a fucking dream job because I’m getting paid good money to write. I don’t have really any friends, but I started becoming really good friends with the people I worked with and it was great. My boss is kind of insane, though and has since fired everyone but me and our moron intern who I never liked anyway. And, now I’ve lost all the new friends I made. We keep acting like we’re still going to be friends, still going to hang out, all that shit…but we aren’t. I know that, they probably do too. We didn’t have time to become close enough to stay friends one we stopped working together. We would have gotten that close, but we just weren’t together long enough. It’s tiring to pretend like we’re going to continue to be friends and I don’t really see the point in it, so I’m not going to anymore. I’ll do the texting every once in a while thing, but the rest is silly; the saying “we should hang out soon” or almost making plans. The thing is, both of the people I worked with, they already have friends, they have no reason to try and stay friends with me. So, I guess the point of this post is that I’m accepting the fact that I’ve lost these people and I’m back to having zero friends.
